Blackpool Adoption Trial: Teacher Jamie Varley Accused of Murder and Sexual Assault of 13-Month-Old Baby

Former teacher Jamie Varley and partner John McGowan-Fazakerley on trial for the murder and sexual assault of 13-month-old Preston Davey during adoption.

BLACKPOOL, UK — A deeply disturbing trial has commenced at Preston Crown Court involving a former high school teacher and his partner, accused of the systematic abuse and murder of a 13-month-old baby boy they were in the process of formally adopting. The prosecution alleges that the child, who was supposed to be in a place of safety, was instead subjected to a “sinister reality” of violence and sexual exploitation.

What Happened

Preston Davey (whom the couple had renamed Elijah) was placed with 37-year-old Jamie Varley and 32-year-old John McGowan-Fazakerley in April 2023. By July 27, 2023, the child was dead. Prosecutors allege that during the four months the child lived with the couple, he was “routinely ill-treated, sexually abused, and physically assaulted.” On the day of his death, Varley allegedly filmed the child suffering from a respiratory collapse on a bed instead of seeking medical aid.

Police Response

Authorities were alerted when the couple brought the unresponsive child to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest. While Varley claimed the baby had nearly drowned in a bath, medical staff noted the child was dry and showed no signs of water inhalation. A subsequent police investigation into the couple’s digital devices uncovered a trove of indecent images and videos documenting the abuse.

Victim Information

Thirteen-month-old Preston Davey was described by his former foster mother as a “beautiful, happy, and lovable baby” before he was placed with the defendants. A post-mortem examination revealed that the infant had sustained approximately 40 traumatic injuries, including a fractured arm, internal trauma, and 30 external bruises. The cause of death was determined to be acute upper airway obstruction, likely caused by smothering or the insertion of an object into his mouth.

Suspect Information

Jamie Varley, a former Head of Year at South Shore Academy in Blackpool, faces 26 charges, including Murder, Manslaughter, and multiple counts of Sexual Assault by Penetration. John McGowan-Fazakerley is charged with causing or allowing the death of a child and several counts of child cruelty and sexual assault. Both men have pleaded not guilty to all charges. Varley remains in custody as the trial, which began in late April 2026, continues.

Community Reaction

The case has sparked intense outrage across Lancashire and the broader UK, particularly regarding the vetting processes of adoption agencies. Former colleagues of Varley expressed shock, though the court heard testimony that Varley had previously “unburdened” himself to a co-worker about having “dark thoughts” toward the child just weeks before the murder.

Official Statement

Prosecutor Peter Wright KC told the jury that the couple was “wholly unsuited” to be parents. “The evidence demonstrates that he was murdered by one of the people entrusted with his wellbeing,” Wright stated during his opening remarks.

Closing

Authorities are continuing to present forensic evidence and witness testimony. The trial is expected to last several weeks as the jury reviews the extensive digital evidence recovered from the scene.
